A Lesson Learned: by Robin Thomas
I am not a fan of flies. I generally think of them as pointless, dirty, pests that have no place in my house, but occasionally I can find it in my heart to issue a stay of execution.
This morning I was trying to guide a fly out the door into the great beyond of freedom, but he just kept fighting me and wanted to stay in the house which unbeknownst to him would mean certain death. Stupid fly. Why did he fight? Because he couldn’t see the freedom.
It made me think of how we are constantly fighting God’s will because we can’t see the way to freedom, but HE can.
Surrendering to God’s will must be a daily commitment. It’s not a one and done thing. It can be as easy as “What is your plan for me today, God? I suppose it is not unheard of for someone to get the entire plan at once, but most likely that is a rare occurrence. There is a reason the scripture says, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God…”
(Matt 6:33).
God is kind of like our divine SIRI, ask and He will direct you.
When you ask SIRI for directions you are given a step by step agenda. It often frustrates me because I want to see ahead. “Great, SIRI, I turn left in 50 feet, but where do I get on the freeway? “ I don’t want to know that I turn right in another 25 feet, and left at the end of the road and repeat that 5 times before I get to the freeway. I want to know now. But in reality I have to make all those small steps because there is no access to the freeway through my neighbor’s yard and over the treetops.
I’m like the fly, fighting, fighting, fighting, because I think I know better.
Have you ever felt like you broke SIRI because you have had to be rerouted so many times? My poor Australian Male voice SIRI must feel like screaming at me, “For bloody sake, Robin, will you just go the way I tell you? I’m sure God has wanted to tell me that many times, since I’ve been known to be a teeny, tiny bit headstrong, but He patiently waits for me to seek HIM first every day and He will give me the next step in His plan for me.
Corrie ten Boom, Holocaust survivor and author says, "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God."
Makes sense to me, although it’s still hard to do. But remember that HE has already won.
Jesus said, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." - John 16:33.
I feel like God says, “Just trust me, I am trying to guide you to freedom.”
So don’t be the fly. Don’t fight God.
Come to Him every day for His special instructions to fly to freedom in Him.
