A Lesson Learned: by Robin Thomas
“Does anyone want some sourdough starter?” That is what a friend of mine posted on Facebook. She showed a picture of this gorgeous, golden brown loaf of sourdough bread that I have no doubt tasted as good as it looked, considering the source. I quickly replied, “I do.”
She told me where to pick it up and so the journey began. And quite the journey it is.
Now the first thing you learn is how to feed it. Say what? The more you feed it, the more it grows.
Sourdough starter is a fermented mixture of flour and water, containing a colony of microorganisms including wild yeast and lactobacilli. –Wikipedia
In fact, if you don’t discard some of your starter it will literally break through the lid of any container, but if it’s not fed it will die. The “discard” is what creates a chain effect that you can share with friends who can share it with friends and so on.
Tisha gave it to Robin who gave it to Elizabeth and Lorraine who gave it to...
God’s love is like sourdough starter.
One feeds the body, the other feeds the soul.
They both bring JOY to those with whom it is shared.
Sourdough brings people together to share it right out of the oven, the gospel brings people together to be fed spiritually.
Sourdough starter will die if it’s not fed, just like the Christian will die spiritually if they are not connected to the body of Christ.
And just like sourdough starter, God’s love can be shared with people and then they can share it and so on, and so on.
Mother Teresa said, “The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.”
What people feel in their soul is so much harder to satisfy. They spend their lives trying to fill a God shaped hole with anything they can think of to fill it, money, adventure, relationships, but the soul was created for God. God’s love gives you light in your soul.
When you accept God’s love through the gift of his Son you shine light.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
Here’s a thought:
Share some sourdough starter with someone and include the verse, John 6:35,
we call it multi-tasking, ha!
